Vliv sociální třídy na manželství v Pýše a předsudku
HOSPODÁŘSKÁ, Martina
The aim of my bachelor thesis is to consider the importance of social class and determine to what extent it influences the formation of marriages in one of the most famous classic novels Pride and Prejudice by the significant English author Jane Austen. In the theoretical part, I will describe the historical and social background of the late 18th and early 19th century, which is the time the author lived in. In the practical part, I will specifically focus on the marriages that were formed in the novel and try to determine whether the characters were influenced by class differences when choosing their partner. I will also characterize the importance of social class in general and mention how the role of female characters differs from the male ones.
Explanation of professional and educational visions of pupils in the ninth grade
Vařeková, Karolína ; Remr, Jiří (advisor) ; Petrúšek, Ivan (referee)
1 Abstract This thesis is focused on the interpretation of the ninth-grade pupil's conceptions of hierarchical segmentation of society based on profession and obtained degree of education. Its main goal is to clarify student's perception of inequalities of social status among different work positions and to understand impact of study achievements on their vertical grouping. Theoretical part deals with sociological theories to explain the role of occupation and education in formation and maintenance of social stratification. Analytical part validates theoretical explanations by qualitative research conducted within one ninth class. Research questions are answered by qualitative analysis of data acquired by in-depth semi-structured interviews. Student's conceptions correspond to the basic three-dimensional hierarchical classification of the social layers defined in theoretical part. Mutual inequalities of those layers depend mainly on the level of work position which is related to particular layers. Pupils perceive different social status among vertically segmented vocational groups to be justified because individuals within those categories are distinguished by different personality traits. Achievement of specific social status depends to a great extent on educational performance, which is a measure of...

The aim of my thesis is to observe and to analyse one of Balzac's characters who appears mainly in The Human Comedy. Eugene Rastignac's character changes in the course of novels. And the change is caused by his environment and also by the surrounding characters. Concerning the methodological part of my work, I use two Czech theorists who deal with the typology of characters (František Všetička, Bohumil Fořt). I will try to choose relevant fragments of Balzac's novels where I will describe change of the character. At the end I point out the future development of the subject and also the actual usage of Rastignac's fate as a pattern of ambitious young man.
On the Social Position of the Jewish Minority in Germany, 1871-1890
Plíčková, Helena ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Tumis, Stanislav (referee)
The thesis deals with the social position of the Jewish minority in Germany during the first decades of the Second Reich; it is intended as a contribution to the social history with an emphasis on the history of everyday life. It attemps to answer a question, why despite (what seemed to be) a highly successful assimilation, or more precisely acculturation, the Jews became a target of hateful attacks again in the late 1870's and 1880's. Various methods have been applied to determine, firstly, how the German-Jewish family life looked, whether and how its education approach and job structure differed from those of the majority; secondly, in which way the social-economic situation affected the minority position, its participation in public life and its attitude to the recently estabilished state; and last but not least, the way the German-Jews understood and perceived themselves, as well as the East European immigrants (so called Ostjuden) and the public's anti-Semitism. The result of the study shows that the German-Jewish values and customs were mainly identical to those of the bourgeoisie, probably with an endogamy being the only specific feature. At the time of rising Conservatism and in spite of experiencing bitter disappointment at the again appearing anti-Semitism, their optimism and trust in...

The profession of a nurse has been formed for a long time and this process still continues. At first, it was laic care, then charity care which was later transformed into organized therapeutic care. The quality of therapeutic care has been increasing thanks to the expert knowledge of the people who provided this care. Historical development helps the understanding and setting of the main factors of progress in the nursing profession. The nursing profession is still gaining importance which is connected with the permanent growth of qualification. For this bachelor thesis 3 goals were set: 1) To analyse the available literature about nurses' social and professional status over history. 2) To chart nurses' social and professional status over history. 3) To create an informational material about nurses' social and professional status over history. This bachelor thesis is theoretical. It was made by secondary data analysis method. It was necessary to study a great amount of specialized Czech and English literature, qualification theses, expert articles and internet databases. The output and the benefit of the thesis is the informational material that is intended for the laics and the experts as well. It also clarifies the development of the nurse profession and its social status in countries other than our own

The Changing Legal and Social Status of the LGBT People in the U.S. Since 1990
Sochacký, Jakub ; Hervey, Norma (advisor) ; Young, Ralph (referee)
This paper deals with the role of American courts, specifically their decisions, regarding the rights and social status of LGBT people, which is an acronym standing for lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender persons. The main finding is that court decisions in favor of LGBTs make lives of such people even more difficult, because authorities in states where such decisions are taken often try to circumvent these decisions using legislative powers. However, in the long term, it seems that courts manage to initiate debates about LGBT-related topics with various arguments that the American society is forced to consider. It appears that in such debates common sense prevails over prejudices and myths. One such myth that was widely accepted by society was that when a child lives with a homosexual in a common household, such child was going to become homosexual him- or herself. This paper also explores an analogy between current efforts of LGBT people to reach full equality and secure anti- discrimination measures for themselves and the struggle for civil rights of African-Americans. Both these groups have faced treatment which suggested that they are second-class citizens. One of the ways society expresses this second-class citizenry is by denying LGBTs access to the institution of marriage arguing it...
